The Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) commemorates the World Day for Decent Work on October 7, 2023, an important international observance that underscores the significance of decent work for all employees. This occasion serves as a platform to raise awareness about labor rights, social protection, and the importance of fair working conditions.
SOCOTU\’s engagement in this commemoration involves a range of activities, including seminars, workshops, discussions, and awareness campaigns. These efforts are aimed at shedding light on the specific challenges confronting Somali workers and advocating for improved working conditions within Somalia.
It is unfortunate to note that the Somali Minister of Labour and Social Affairs has been actively opposing workers\’ rights and labor unions. SOCOTU expresses its concern regarding the denial of Somali workers\’ rights and the Minister\’s opposition to labor unions. In light of these developments, SOCOTU calls upon the International Labour Organization (ILO) to reevaluate its ongoing support for the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. Ensuring the protection of workers\’ rights and the promotion of labor unions are fundamental principles upheld by the ILO, and it is imperative that they reconsider their support in alignment with these principles. It is essential to uphold and promote the principles of decent work and labor rights for the betterment of workers in Somalia and around the world.
