The Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) warmly welcomes the signing of the Somali Labor Code by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This historic step, initiated by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and approved by both Houses of the Federal Parliament, marks a significant milestone in safeguarding workers’ rights and ensuring a fair and just work environment.
The newly enacted Labor Code is a crucial legislative framework that guarantees the protection of workers, promotes equality, and upholds the fundamental rights of employees in Somalia. It ensures that Somali workers receive their rightful protections and benefits while fostering a conducive labor market that aligns with global labor standards and the principles of justice and fairness.
For the first time in 52 years, this legislation has undergone comprehensive reform and modernization to reflect the current realities of Somalia’s evolving labor sector, economic development, and the growing free-market economy. We commend the Somali government’s commitment to labor rights, social justice, and sustainable economic growth.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his leadership in signing this crucial law and to Minister Yusuf Mohamed Adan for his dedication in spearheading these reforms. This progressive step ensures that labor laws in Somalia are aligned with Islamic principles and international labor standards, providing a strong foundation for a fair, inclusive, and worker-friendly labor system.
As SOCOTU, we reaffirm our commitment to working closely with the government, employers, and all stakeholders to ensure the full implementation of the new Labor Code. We remain dedicated to advocating for better working conditions, fair wages, and job security for all Somali workers.
