The Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) convened a meeting focused on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), addressing the current conditions of Somali workers and the importance of workplace safety standards.
During the meeting, Hamdi Abdi Hashi, Head of Health and Occupational Safety at SOCOTU, presented a detailed report on the situation of workers in Somalia. The report highlighted key concerns, including:
• Workplace Safety Gaps: Many workplaces lack proper safety measures and equipment to protect employees from accidents and injuries.
• Health Risks: Workers face significant health hazards due to poor working environments and limited access to health services.
• Need for Regulation: There is an urgent need to implement and enforce national policies and regulations on occupational health and safety.
Hamdi emphasized SOCOTU’s commitment to advocating for improved labor standards, training programs on workplace safety, and stronger collaboration between government agencies, employers, and labor unions to protect the health and well-being of workers across Somalia.
The meeting concluded with recommendations to:
1. Develop a national occupational safety framework.
2. Conduct awareness campaigns for employers and employees.
3. Strengthen legal enforcement to ensure compliance with OSH standards.
SOCOTU reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring safe, healthy, and fair working conditions for all Somali workers.
