SOCOTU Participation in the 46th OATUU General Council and OATUU/ILO Conference – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

The 46th General Council Congress of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) concluded on 22 August 2025 at the Johari Rotana Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The event brought together trade union leaders and representatives from across Africa under the theme:
“Trade Unions Facing New Challenges: What is the Future Strategy?”

The congress was officially graced by Hon. Kassim Majaliwa, Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, who highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between governments and trade unions in addressing emerging labor challenges.

Discussions focused on innovative strategies to safeguard workers’ rights, promote social justice, and shape the future of trade unionism in Africa. Mr. Mohamed Osman Haji, President of the Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU), actively participated in these deliberations, reaffirming SOCOTU’s commitment to defending workers’ interests and strengthening African unity.

The second day of the conference focused on:
• Strengthening the capacity of African trade unions
• Enhancing collaboration between unions at international and regional levels
• Addressing emerging challenges facing workers

The outcomes of this historic gathering will serve as a roadmap for African trade unions navigating a rapidly evolving socio-economic environment. SOCOTU remains committed to playing a leading role in protecting Somali workers’ rights and contributing to the strategic vision of trade unionism across the continent.
