The Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) is saddened by the events that happened in Mogadishu during the last 24hours. The SOCOTU calls for immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities between the government and the opposition leaders. We call on both parties to respect the rule of law and STOP the clashes.
The SOCOTU respects the democratic rights of citizens to demonstrate peacefully and air their grievances. The SOCOTU however calls on the opposition to show restraint and avoid statements that can put the country into anarchy. We call on the President to show leadership and calm the situation to prevent the country from plunging into chaos.
The SOCOTU recognizes the democratic gains that have been made over the recent years and calls on politicians to proceed with caution to prevent the country from going backwards.
Finally, we urge the federal member states and the federal government to end their stalemate on the elections to give room for a democratic transition.
